Down in the Basement Studio

I have finished a bunch of siding and am ahead of the carpenter guys so I started in on painting the concrete walls in my basement studio.  It is hard!!  I probably should have a sprayer but I am rolling it on (two coats of primer) and the surface which I thought was kind of smooth is nothing but!  It is like trying to paint the surface of the moon with all its craters and pock marks.  Still, I persist and I am finally getting some sort of painted finish even if it isn't perfect.  It certainly brightens up the space.  Today the electricians will install the LED lighting and that will be great!  No dark corners.







And this will be the bathroom.  The plumbers had a heck of time dealing with the trap in the tub.  I don't think it was prepped correctly when the slab was poured but what do I know?  The layout was also not done right (we were not consulted) so the toilet will have to be turned and a little half wall built so that we have room to get to the tub.  This is ridiculous because we had all the room in the world down there.  It will all work out.

I am creating this blog as a way to record the building of our First Day Cottage in Walpole, NH.  We purchased 7.2 acres of open meadow one mile outside of the beautiful village of Walpole, NH.  We have lived in an old 1849 house on the town common for the past 20 years and wanted to "downsize" to a one level more energy efficient home.  I knew a local architect named David Howard designed these owner built cottages and was able to visit one that was built for his daughter.  I really liked the tall ceilings, exposed beams and rustic quality of the cottages.  Something totally different than what we had for 20 years.  Of course we are not building it ourselves.  We might have attempted this kind of thing 35 years ago but not an option these days.  Did a bit more work finishing up the display boxes.  Filled the nail holes and did the caulking and some of the priming.  The weather has not cooperated this week though with an April snowstorm.  My display for spring includes birds, nests and other bird related items that I have made.  These displays are fun to do and have attracted some attention.  I think the UPS driver is intrigued when he delivers the packages.   I finally was able to unpack and display my collection of vintage state plates.  This large wall in the foyer is perfect for them.  Unfortunately as I hammered in the last of them a few fell off and broke!  Now I will be looking for replacements along with the ones I have been missing to complete the whole USA. On the Line

I am passionate about clotheslines.  I love everything about them and am a dedicated hanger outer through all seasons.  I can't get enough of that fresh off the clothesline smell.  So being without my clothesline for two whole years has been painful.  Not life or death but I really missed it!  It is where I breath deep and settle my mind and count my blessings.  I have had some nice clotheslines in my other homes but this one is going to be my favorite I think.  The same guys who did the fence made this for us and it is a beauty!  Sturdy and classy and stunning to look at.  I will eventually stain it a color when the wood has weathered enough but right now I am basking in its beauty!  Life is good. Going to have to tighten up those lines once the posts settle in a bit.  I have placed this clothesline steps away from our back porch so I can have access even through the snow.
