We have a Porch! And some Roof

More progress at the house this week.  We have a porch!  The roof and railings were constructed. There is an opening for 6 foot wide stairs that will come down off the front.  We were concerned that the roof would slope too low and block our lovely view from the inside but Mike worked it out so it did not do that and we are thrilled! It is going to be a lovely place to hang out and enjoy our beautiful pastoral view.





And they started putting the roof on yesterday.  Now that all the rough wiring is done through the roof for the overhead lighting the roof can be installed.  It will be good to get the house completely weather tight.



It definitely gives the house a whole new industrial sort of look.  It is charcoal and the siding is light gray so very neutral. Will definitely need to add some flowers to get some color in there!  The garage will be barn red and I began working on those boards this week.  Still very cold here for May.  We even had a little snow over the weekend!  Waiting for a warm-up but hopefully not too warm.

I am creating this blog as a way to record the building of our First Day Cottage in Walpole, NH.  We purchased 7.2 acres of open meadow one mile outside of the beautiful village of Walpole, NH.  We have lived in an old 1849 house on the town common for the past 20 years and wanted to "downsize" to a one level more energy efficient home.  I knew a local architect named David Howard designed these owner built cottages and was able to visit one that was built for his daughter.  I really liked the tall ceilings, exposed beams and rustic quality of the cottages.  Something totally different than what we had for 20 years.  Of course we are not building it ourselves.  We might have attempted this kind of thing 35 years ago but not an option these days.  Did a bit more work finishing up the display boxes.  Filled the nail holes and did the caulking and some of the priming.  The weather has not cooperated this week though with an April snowstorm.  My display for spring includes birds, nests and other bird related items that I have made.  These displays are fun to do and have attracted some attention.  I think the UPS driver is intrigued when he delivers the packages.   I finally was able to unpack and display my collection of vintage state plates.  This large wall in the foyer is perfect for them.  Unfortunately as I hammered in the last of them a few fell off and broke!  Now I will be looking for replacements along with the ones I have been missing to complete the whole USA. On the Line

I am passionate about clotheslines.  I love everything about them and am a dedicated hanger outer through all seasons.  I can't get enough of that fresh off the clothesline smell.  So being without my clothesline for two whole years has been painful.  Not life or death but I really missed it!  It is where I breath deep and settle my mind and count my blessings.  I have had some nice clotheslines in my other homes but this one is going to be my favorite I think.  The same guys who did the fence made this for us and it is a beauty!  Sturdy and classy and stunning to look at.  I will eventually stain it a color when the wood has weathered enough but right now I am basking in its beauty!  Life is good. Going to have to tighten up those lines once the posts settle in a bit.  I have placed this clothesline steps away from our back porch so I can have access even through the snow.
